Empower: abilities is inviting local artists to participate in Beyond the Canvas: A Collaborative Art Experience, a new project bringing artists and individuals with disabilities together to create original works of art—and meaningful connections.
Through Beyond the Canvas, each participating artist will be paired with an individual with a disability. The partners will meet over a series of creative sessions to exchange ideas, explore techniques and create an original piece of art together.
The project is not about teaching a traditional art class or creating something for another person. It is about working side by side, combining perspectives and discovering what becomes possible through collaboration.
The completed artwork and the stories behind each partnership will be showcased and auctioned during the Beyond the Canvas Open House and Fundraiser on November 10 at the new empower: abilities location, 3345 S. Campbell Avenue in Springfield.
Artists working in all mediums are encouraged to participate. An optional $200 materials stipend is available to help cover project expenses.
Approximately 15 artist-participant partnerships will be selected for this inaugural experience, making each collaboration an important part of launching what empower: abilities hopes will become a signature community event.
