Community Invited to Celebrate White Cane Awareness Day

Empower: abilities invites the community to join us on Thursday, October 15, for a special White Cane Awareness Day event focused on independence, safety and accessibility.

For people who are blind or have low vision, a white cane is much more than a mobility tool. It is a symbol of independence, confidence and the freedom to navigate the community. It also helps communicate to drivers and pedestrians that the person using it may not be able to see approaching traffic or other potential hazards.
‍

White Cane Awareness Day offers an opportunity to learn more about the experiences of people who are blind or have low vision, the importance of safe and accessible communities, and the role each of us can play in removing barriers.
‍

The event will bring community members and organizations together for:

• Community resource booths
• Informative guest speakers
• Information about white cane use and safety
• Opportunities to learn more about accessibility and local resources
• Food and drinks available for purchase from the Arc of the Ozarks AM Donuts & Coffee food truck

People of all abilities are encouraged to attend, connect with local resources and be part of the conversation about creating a community where everyone can participate and travel safely and independently.

Join empower: abilities as we raise awareness, promote safety, celebrate accessibility and support members of our community who are blind or have low vision.
